This book is an absolute godsend for any photographic student. Simple to understand, with plenty of diagrams and text covering every aspect of photography that you would need to know, and is suitable for all levels of photography. It has, and will continue to be a fantastic help to me, throughout my next two years of study.

This is quite simply the best book on the market today giving advanced pratical and theory. Covers every aspect of photography and is a must for anyone interested in advancing there photographic technique.

Basic Photography

Digital camera final report -

Basic Photography Customer Review: Excellent starter book
Even a seasoned photographer like me can learn something. Books that are designed for absolute newbies can often deliver nuggets of information. Langford delivers nuggets in spades and whilst perhaps over technical in places, this book is one that all aspiring, competent and skilled photographers should have on their bookshelves.

Other books I’d recommend to sit alongside this book and again, not aimed at just amateurs are the Scott Kelby photography books and books by Bryan Peterson.

There’s a whole load more out there but with these three authors you’re well on your way to making more than simply holiday snap type images. You’ll begin to see the world through a whole new creative eye, with practice, and those once boring (sorry!) holiday pics will breath new life and become interesting.
Customer Review: Basic Photography
A very good starting point for anyone who wants to expand their understanding of photography. Starting from the ground up, Langford introduces his readers to the science, theory and practice of photography in clear, easy to understand terms without being condescending.

As someone who has always been interested in photography but, until recently, had never really taken the time to read deeply on the subject, this book was a great help in my progression from “beginner” to “serious beginner” and then “amateur”. :P

It’s useful for film and/or digital photographers, as much of the information applies to both formats, although some of the book deals with film alone.

I also recommend “The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography (4th Edition)” to anyone who wants to truly acquire a thorough knowledge of past, present and future photography.

Photoshop CS3 Essential Skills (Photography Essential Skills)

Photoshop CS3 Essential Skills (Photography Essential Skills) Customer Review: Photoshop CS3 Help
Photoshop CS3 is such a gobsmacking programme, particularly if you are new to it (like me), that any help is useful. However, this book is much more than that. Clear pictures, projects, signposted sections and an excellent accompanying CD with the base images, projects and demonstration videos is a of real value. It is well written, in relatively plain and accessible language, with only the odd slip into jargon (that you can find). It develops from beginning to end, and you can skip backwards and forwards through it with ease. Handy reference for later work as you progress. Better value than many books I’ve had of similar type in the past - this is presently my handrail and guide to learning.
Customer Review: A different view
Sorry, but I can’t agree with the other reviewers. I think this book is pathetic: do not be enticed by the fact that it contains lots of pretty colour photos. It has a reasonable run through the very basic background material you need to use a photo editing program (resolution, image types etc). But thereafter it just seems to wander aimlessley through different areas of functionality. If you knew Photoshop before you read the book then it might help (why are you reading the book then?), but otherwise you’ll be confused by the use of new concepts before they are explained, and the seemingly random walk through different ‘things to do’ to photos. It is neither task oriented nor logical in my opinion: and when faced with a photo that I need to work on the book leaves me no better informed as to where to even start.

A fair bit of criticism has to go to the amateur nature of the publisher as well. It doesn’t help when headings all share the same style, so you can’t tell sub-headings from sub-subheadings… and the use of pictures BEFORE the supporting text is utterly confusing. Some degree of consistency in showing before AND after images, just before, just after, small before image, small after image etc. are what the publisher should be sorting out. Also, just throwing the supporting images on a DVD with no direct link from those in the text is just plain lazy. Very amateur.

Microstock Photography: How to Make Money from Your Digital Images Customer Review: Excellent Book!!
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in selling their pictures. It contains loads of common sense tips and it’s a fun read. It is written in a much less stuffy style than some photo books I have read before. The illustrations the author uses relate well to the text and really helped me to make sense of it all. I now feel much better equipped to sell my pictures through stock libraries. Top marks!

Customer Review: The Book
I am new to stock photography. This book has been an enormous help to me. It contains very useful practical guidance. It written in an informal and friendly style that is easy to follow and understand. I particularly liked Chapter 3, which outlines what pictures sell on microstock and why, and Chapter 5, which covers technical issues and how to avoid image rejections. I think its good value and I am already putting the lessons I have learned in to practice.
